The Issues

Affordable Housing

Affordable housing is defined as being housing where an individual or family's rent/mortgage payment consumes no more than 30% of their income.  Those residents who pay more than 30% of their income for housing are forced to make difficult choices as they try to budget for food, health care, clothing and other necessities. There are several programs available to help subsidize housing costs, but unfortunately, demand far exceeds supply and many of our citizens wait several years before securing relief.  There are a number of factors affecting the supply of affordable housing in Lake County.  Click here for more information and data.

Across the nation foreclosures have risen dramatically over the past 5 years.  In Lake County  we have seen foreclosures increase nearly 185% between 2005 and 2009.  Lake County residents, hard hit by job losses, reduced wages and lingering unemployment, continue to seek help from local social services agencies to prevent eviction.  Unfortunately, the need for financial help has been so great that the funds available to prevent eviction will be gone by June 1, 2011.  Click here for more information and data.
